Zu Limonen gibt es vergleichsweise viel präklinische Literatur, unter anderem zu Effekten auf Stimmung und Magen-Darm-Trakt in Tiermodellen. Übertragbare Aussagen für den Menschen lassen sich daraus nicht ableiten: Die eingesetzten Mengen liegen um Größenordnungen über dem, was in einem Arzneimittel enthalten ist. Limonen ist zugleich ein bekanntes Kontaktallergen — bei Hautkontakt mit oxidierten Formen sind Reaktionen beschrieben.
