What is Caryophyllen?
Caryophyllen ist ein sesquiterpenischer Aromastoff und das mit Abstand häufigste Terpen im deutschen Apothekenbestand. Chemisch fällt es aus dem Rahmen: Es besitzt einen Cyclobutanring, was unter den pflanzlichen Terpenen selten ist. Bekannt ist es vor allem als Geruchsträger von schwarzem Pfeffer.
What the research shows — and what it does not
Caryophyllen ist unter den Terpenen insofern eine Besonderheit, als es in Laboruntersuchungen an den Cannabinoid-Rezeptor CB2 bindet — es wird deshalb gelegentlich als „diätetisches Cannabinoid" bezeichnet. CB2-Rezeptoren sitzen überwiegend auf Zellen des Immunsystems und nicht im Zentralnervensystem; eine berauschende Wirkung ist damit nicht verbunden. Die Befunde stammen weit überwiegend aus Zell- und Tiermodellen. Belastbare klinische Studien am Menschen, die daraus eine therapeutische Aussage machen würden, liegen nicht vor.
Context: Terpenes are aroma and fragrance compounds. The effect of a cannabis-based medicine is determined overwhelmingly by its cannabinoids, not by its terpene profile. Claims about therapeutic effects of individual terpenes rest almost entirely on cell and animal models and cannot be transferred to use in humans.
